Ontario EV Charger Rebates and Incentives Available in 2026

Updated 2026 guide to Ontario EV charger rebates. Federal Greener Homes Grant ended — here's what's still available through utilities and local programs.

Ontario EV Charger Rebates and Incentives Available in 2026

The federal Greener Homes Grant ended in early 2024, which caught many Ontario homeowners off guard. But rebate money for EV charger installation hasn't completely disappeared — it's just moved to utilities and local programs. Here's what's actually available in 2026.

What Ended: Federal Greener Homes Grant

The Canada Greener Homes Grant offered up to $5,000 for EV chargers and other energy upgrades. It closed to new applications in February 2024 due to funding exhaustion. If you missed it, you're not alone — hundreds of thousands of Canadians applied and the program ran out faster than expected.

What's Still Available in Ontario (2026)

Toronto Hydro

Toronto Hydro periodically runs EV charger incentive programs for customers within their service territory (City of Toronto). Programs have offered $250–$500 rebates on Level 2 charger installation in the past.

What to do: Check the Toronto Hydro website under "Rebates & Incentives" or call their business line. Programs open and close without much notice.

Alectra Utilities (Brampton, Mississauga, Hamilton)

Alectra serves much of the GTA and has run EV-related incentive programs. Their programs have varied year to year — some offering charger rebates, others focusing on off-peak charging incentives.

What to do: Check Alectra's rebate portal or contact customer service. Mention you're installing a Level 2 home charger.

Hydro One

Hydro One serves rural Ontario and has offered EV charger incentives through various programs. The availability and value of these rebates changes — rural customers should check before assuming nothing is available.

Enbridge Gas

If you're considering a broader home electrification project (replacing gas appliances, adding heat pumps), Enbridge occasionally runs complementary programs that interact with electrical upgrade incentives.

Federal Programs Still Available

Federal EV Purchase Incentive (iZEV)

While not specific to charger installation, the federal iZEV program (when active) provides up to $5,000 off the purchase price of eligible new EVs. This indirectly reduces the total cost of EV adoption including the charger.

Status in 2026: Check the Transport Canada iZEV website for current eligibility — the program has been paused and restarted several times.

Income Tax — Capital Cost Allowance

If you use your EV for business purposes and install a charger at a business location, you may be eligible to write off the charger under CCA Class 43.1 or 43.2. Speak with your accountant.

Municipal Programs

Some Ontario municipalities have offered additional programs:

  • City of Hamilton — has offered EV-ready building incentives
  • Region of Waterloo — periodically offers incentives linked to their EV-ready home program
  • City of Ottawa — has explored home electrification rebates

Check your local municipality's website under "sustainability" or "environment" programs.

How to Maximize Your Savings

Here's the practical playbook for a GTA homeowner in 2026:

  1. Check your utility's website before you commit to a timeline — some programs require pre-approval before installation
  2. Ask your electrician — a good one will know what's currently available in your area
  3. Bundle the panel upgrade and charger installation — combined visits save $300–$600 in labour costs even without rebates
  4. Keep all receipts and permits — most rebate programs require proof of ESA inspection and professional installation

The Bottom Line

Rebates make the math better, but they shouldn't be the reason you delay an EV charger install — or the reason you rush into one from an uncertified contractor. A properly installed Level 2 charger by a licensed GTA electrician is the floor, regardless of what rebate programs are active.
